SUNDAY’S STORY
It started long before the garden.
I grew up in Jamaica, where growing things was simply part of life.
Nature was everywhere as you might expect growing up on a tropical island, but it was also deeply woven into our home and the way we lived.
My grandmother was a farmer and a butcher, and some of my favourite childhood memories are tied to the land around us. My siblings and I would trek through the forest behind our house to endless raspberry bushes. We climbed apple, orange and guava trees to pick fruit and eat it right there. My grandmother grew cacao, raised pigs and kept cows, and we helped wherever little hands could.
Growing has always been part of my story. I just didn't always recognize it.
Hi, I’m Dani
REMEMBERING
Like a lot of people, I found my way back to growing during the quiet of the pandemic. Or rather, remembered is a better word.
Life slowed down enough for me to reconnect with something that had been there all along.
It started with a little 2-by-3-foot raised garden bed my wife gave me. I planted tomatoes.
The following year there were heat mats and seed-starting kits, a new garden bed, strawberries, cucumbers, bell peppers and carrots. I became fascinated by the simple act of caring for something and watching it grow.
FINDING MY WAY BACK
One bed became more beds. Eventually, there was a greenhouse.
And when we built it, one of my first thoughts was:
I want to share this.
Not just what we grow, but what happens here—the peace of being in the garden, the joy of making something with your hands, food picked just outside the door, and the pleasure of gathering people together.
Today, this place has a name: Sunday Garden.
But for me, Sunday Garden began long before there was a greenhouse, a website or even that first raised bed.
In many ways, I was just finding my way back home.
Sundays have always felt a little different.
A little slower. A little softer.
It's morning coffee taken outside, hands in the soil with nowhere else to be, something picked from the garden for dinner, and a table that gets fuller as the afternoon goes on.
From Sunday Garden is my way of sharing a little of that feeling; the garden, the growing, the making and the gathering with others.
Life should feel a little more like Sunday.
WHY SUNDAY?
